The Importance of Networking with Alumni

I earned my summer internship by networking with alumni and leveraging club connections and events. I was e-mailed by an Isenberg alumni after I submitted my resume to attend the Marketing Career Networking Night (hosted by the Isenberg Marketing Club) and was invited to attend an informational interview. After speaking with the company representative at the Networking Night and attending a half hour informational interview, I was invited to the final round of interviews in the Boston office over spring break. I had to prepare a presentation for a mock client and attend a 2 hour interview. I was the first interview out of 12 candidates so I had to wait a few weeks before hearing back. Fortunately, it was good news! I was offered an internship for the summer.

My advice to students is to pay attention to events going on on campus. Many clubs and organizations provide opportunities to network with company representatives and Isenberg alumni. Take advantage of those opportunities! It can truly pay off. If making these connections does not pay off immediately, they will still be valuable in the future because you never know where your career path could take you.
